Question

Can you talk about making beneficial resolutions and goals in the practice, and how to keep to them?

Answer

Later in the retreat, we're going to teach a guided meditation concerned with the same Ten Paramis I just mentioned, and in that meditation there's a part for each Parami in which we want to stimulate the thought: "How can I make my Generosity grow?"; "How can I make my Morality grow?"; "How can I make each Parami grow?" It's specifically designed to push our limits in the practice, to make us think of some way that we can grow. Some way of making a beneficial resolution.

It's ironic that the very first time we gave the special retreat, and this was not planned by the way, it was from December through January, so we covered New Years and the Ten Parami reflection was New Year's Eve - by chance, not planned!

So that is a clear way that any of you can make a beneficial resolution or goal in your life, and in your practice.

Now, how do you keep to them? One of the biggest ways to keep to your resolutions in this practice is to have Kalyanamittas, to have good, kind, wise, spiritual friends who will encourage you in this practice. If you make a resolution to do a certain thing, but you hang around people who are all doing the opposite thing, how are you going to change easily if you have no support?

However if you make a resolution in this practice to do something good, and you hang around people who are already doing the exact same thing, then it just gets so easy. So that's a good way to keep your resolutions going for your growth in your practice.
