Question

From time to time the mind resists doing a meditation session. How does one settle the mind in these situations? For example, resistance to doing the standing meditation?

Answer

How does one settle the mind in these situations?

Sometimes we just call Mara by it's name, and go, "Mara, I can see you trying to resist me doing the standing meditation, I'm not going to put up with this. Yesterday I did the standing, I can do it again today." Sometimes we just do it that simple. You have to face Mara straight on and say, "No, I'm not going to do this."

Sometimes you have to encourage yourself, like a cheering squad. Why is it that sport teams, football teams, whatever, have cheerleaders on the side? Why is it, when I was a swimming coach, I yelled louder than anybody else in that whole place when my kids were swimming? Cheering them on, cheering them on. Sometimes we have to cheer ourselves on. You're walking to the standing, you don't feel like doing it, "Come on Steve, it's good for you. Yeah, come on, you've done it before. You know it's good for you. You know you're always going to feel better after a few minutes, anyhow. It's just silly resistance. Its just silly Mara," and you cheer yourself on.

Sometimes you want to bring up the moral shame, "You are an old student, old students have to be examples for new students". Some of you have been in a retreat with Rosemary's mother. Most of you have no idea what happens to those young people, when they're doing meditation with an 85-year-old! Even somebody said to me once (I often lead the standing on the first day of the retreat), "If Steve can do it at his age, I can do it!" They were a good 20-odd years younger than me.

So sometimes that bit of moral shame, sometimes a cheerleader group, sometimes just facing Mara straight on. Any different method that helps you to push yourself a bit. Even to remind yourself, really, about pushing limits. What's the benefit of pushing limits? It's a very simple benefit you get from pushing limits, you have bigger limits in the future!

So quite a few different ways - whatever will work - to get you to go in there, stand, and see what happens.
