Question

On day 10, you talk about the slow and fast lanes in life. Could you please expand on this, and also give some advice on switching lanes if you're used to driving in the fast lane?

Answer

Sometimes, we're in the fast lane because we're not discriminating about what is important and what is not. Reflections I like to use, and encourage other people to use, help us to be able to realize what is important and what is not. We use the Dedication of Intention to develop the Paramis, the Death Reflection and the fifth reflection, "to care and not to care."

We take these three together: remember the dedication of intention -- "May I develop the Paramis as much as I can, so that I can be of the most benefit to myself and all beings;" reflect on death, that death may come at any time; and then look at your life, at what you get yourself involved in, and consider it in terms of "to care and not to care." Take a lot of the things you get involved in and ask yourself, "Does it help with my dedication? Considering that I might die tomorrow, how important is it?"

If you see that it's not important and is not helping your dedication, you make a resolution to care more about the things that are important, and care less about this particular one. You go through a lot of your activities in this way, so you can see where you're misusing your energy and focus, and are just doing an activity because you're doing it, without any deeper meaning to it.

Then, if you start to see that one particular thing helps your direction a lot, considering that you might die tomorrow, you make a resolution to care more about it. This is developing Compassion for yourself. These three reflections are very helpful in investigating your life, so you can see what actions could be avoided and what actions could be increased.
