Question

The compassion meditation wishes good things, in other words, peace of mind to others. Yet he or she is not obliged to accept, or even acknowledge that they might want or need peace of mind. What should a Buddhist do in this circumstance?

Answer

It doesn't stop you from wishing it. Whether they want to change or not has nothing to do with whether you're going to wish it. You just want to open your heart to people and wish them well - that's all you're doing. So don't make it conditional on the fact of whether they will change or not. Don't make it conditional on even if they know about it or not. You're just going to sit there and open your heart for every living being in the whole world, and outside the world if you want to do them, too. Whatever is other's attitude doesn't stop your wish.
